St Luke’s Hospital is a 185-bedded geriatric community hospital set up in March 1996 by 8 Christian churches and organisations. We are a voluntary welfare organisation providing holistic care to the elderly sick in Singapore with a multi-disciplinary approach including medical, nursing, rehabilitative and spiritual care.

We are looking for suitably qualified and dedicated individuals to join us in fostering a supportive work environment where every team member’s unique contribution is valued.

Overview
The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH), in collaboration with Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and various participating hospitals have launched a Professional Conversion Programme for Registered Nurses (RN) and Allied Health Professionals (AHP) for the healthcare sector to help non-healthcare trained professionals acquire skills as Registered Nurses (RN), Occupational Therapists (OT) and Physiotherapists (PT).

The PCP – Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy is a scheme targeted at augmenting Singapore’s pool of professionals by enabling polytechnic and university graduates without prior healthcare career experience to undergo Nanyang Polytechnic’s 2-year full-time Diploma in Nursing or 3-year full-time Diploma in Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy course. The programme will provide trainees with a quality education and experiential foundation that gives them a head-start in a fulfilling career in the healthcare sector.

Objective
The PCP – Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy is targeted at augmenting the pool of healthcare manpower in the following ways:
Assist healthcare institutions to convert and train existing non-healthcare trained Singaporeans to take on healthcare positions;
Assist non-healthcare trained Singaporeans who are keen to work in the healthcare sector to embark on long-term profession healthcare careers by acquiring relevant healthcare training.

Course Outline and Schedule
Currently, this PCP offers training in programmes through Nanyang Polytechnic – Diploma in Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. The courses are structured to prepare students to function competently as registered nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists in various healthcare settings. The graduate will assess, manage and prevent problems related to health and illness in individuals and their families. The course is designed to develop nurses and therapists who are committed to excellence in the care they provide, and to their continuing professional development.

The Diploma in Nursing course is offered full-time over two-years. The Diploma in Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy course is offered full-time over three-years. Each year comprises of two semesters.

Certification
Nanyang Polytechnic will award participants who have passed all the examinations a Diploma in Nursing, Diploma in Occupational Therapy or Diploma in Physiotherapy.

Career Prospects
The prospects for graduates are very promising. They will be eligible for registration with the Singapore Nursing Board/ Ministry of Health, which gives them the licence to practice as professional nurses/ allied health professionals. Career opportunities are numerous and are available in hospitals, polyclinics, specialist clinics, and organisations involved in clinical trials and research.

Pre-requisites
For individuals and company-sponsored trainees, you must:

Be a Singaporean / Permanent Resident;
Be degree graduates from reputable universities or diploma graduates from only local polytechnics;
3 GCE ‘A’ Level credits and 2 GCE ‘O’ Level credits in a Science and Mathematics subject;
Not be holding nursing or allied healthcare position;
Not be holding healthcare qualifications similar to the training sought at the point of application;
Have a minimum of two years working experience, excluding national service;
Have not have received any previous financial support under any PCP;
Pass medical examination required by employing hospitals and fulfill the terms set by the sponsoring healthcare institutions;
Trainees are required to meet the polytechnic’s attendance requirement and sit for all prescribed examinations;
Trainees are required to fulfill 100% attendance for clinical attachment and nursing sessions as part of the regulatory requirement for registration.

Course Fee and Funding

SupportDiploma in Nursing (2-years)

The total course fee is S$55,004 (including 7% GST). St Luke’s Hospital will bear the course fee of S$17,293 over two years and will provide training allowance of S$1000 per month throughout the two years of training to deserving and promising candidates.

Diploma in Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy (3-years)
The total course fee is S$53,093 (including 7% GST). St Luke’s Hospital and WDA will bear a portion of the course fees of S$46,277 over three years and will provide training allowance of S$1000 per month throughout the three years of training to deserving and promising candidates. The candidate bears the course fee of S$6,816 over three years.

Application Procedures
Step 1: If you are interested in switching to a career in nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, you must first apply on-line via WDA website at http://www.wda.gov.sg/

Applicants who require internet assistance could email their enquiries to wda_healthcare@wda.gov.sg.

The applications for the Diploma in Nursing, Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy course under PCP (RN/OT/PT) have to be submitted latest by 31 October 2010. Late applications will not be entertained.

If St Luke’s Hospital is one of your choices, WDA will forward your application form to us.

Step 2: If selected, you will be notified by us to come for an Open House cum Preliminary Interview at St Luke’s Hospital. Only shortlisted applicants will be notified.

Step 3:Upon successful interviewing and being selected by our Hospital, we will register you for the Diploma in Nursing, Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy course with Nanyang Polytechnic. You will then sign 2 sponsorship deeds, one with WDA and one with St Luke’s Hospital. Two guarantors will be required for the signing of the deed.

Step 4: Thereafter, you will be sent for training and this training will be supported by us. The support for training will be according to our terms. Upon successful completion of the course, you will serve a 3-year bond with our Hospital.
