#GoSilverSG Stories: Finding Joy with Friends in the Community

Amidah Binte Ayob, 66

Beneficiary of Western Silvercare programme, St Luke's Hospital

You're never too old. The more you move, the younger you'll feel!

Mdm Amidah Binte Ayob, 66, lives life with zeal. Her daily routine starts with accompanying her granddaughter to kindergarten, before she heads to Working Out to Wellness (WOW) sessions with friends under the guidance of a Physical Trainer. She also receives regular health screening at the Community Health Post. These are all part of the Western Silvercare community programme offered by St Luke’s Hospital at various Active Ageing Centres in the Bukit Batok region.

Following the passing of her husband, Mdm Amidah relocated to Bukit Batok to live with her son’s family. Adapting to her new surroundings, she gradually found a sense of belonging within her community. Mdm Amidah now attends the WOW sessions 2- 3 times a week at Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre.

A firm believer in staying active and exercising, Mdm Amidah hopes that more and more seniors within the community will find joy in ageing!

Despite occasional discomfort in her arms and back, Mdm Amidah has found that engaging in light exercise not only alleviates her pain but also uplifts her mood. After each session, she relishes accompanying her friends to the market and having breakfast together. Each time she sees a senior within the neighbourhood, she will often boast about the health benefits of exercising. A strong advocate, she enthusiastically encourages her neighbours to join the programme, telling them, “You’re never too old! The more you move, the younger you’ll feel!”

In her own way, Mdm Amidah champions the advantages of keeping and being active, spreading joy throughout her community. With each social interaction and every group exercise, Mdm Amidah finds herself to be increasingly joyful. The camaraderie and companionship she enjoys provide emotional support and a sense of community, helping her remain positive and resilient. Over time, these connections have become integral to her life.

A firm believer in staying active and exercising, Mdm Amidah hopes that more and more seniors within the community will find joy in ageing!
