When asked if he is fearful of the upcoming major spinal surgery, Mr Lee responded “Of course…”. Yet, amidst his fears, he discovered solace in music, with each note acting as a balm to his soul. Music Therapist Karen’s gentle coaxing of melodies from the piano keys unlocked fragments of his past, immersing him in the timeless tunes of classics.
Mr Lee’s session involved the use of patient-preferred music in singing, clinical improvisation, rhythmic drumming, and lyric discussions of the themes in the songs he chose. These sessions served as a bridge between Mr Lee’s present reality and cherished memories, filling his heart with warmth and nostalgia.
Prompted by Karen to dedicate a song to his family, Mr Lee chose “城里的月光”, symbolising reunion and expressing profound feelings of love and longing for his family members ever since his admission.
Despite undergoing spine surgery and grappling with limited mobility in his fingers, Mr Lee’s determination and passion for music remained unyielding. As he continues his recuperation as an inpatient at St Luke’s Hospital (SLH), he eagerly anticipates the day when he can once again serve in the ministry as a keyboardist.
