Dementia care course (basic)

Dementia can affect the person, family and caregivers. Join this course to be equipped with the fundamental knowledge and skills in dementia care.

Course objectives

  • Know how to use the person-centred care approach
  • Acquire skills to communicate effectively
  • Apply management strategies for distressed behaviours

Course outline (5 half days)

Session 1: Person-centred care

  • Using the Person-centred care approach
  • Recognising and describing how the healthcare worker’s background and experiences may affect the provision of care
  • Understanding the psychological needs of persons with dementia

Session 2: Communicating effectively

  • Communicating effectively with persons with dementia
  • Understanding and practising skills when communicating with persons with dementia in distress

Session 3: Designing activities

  • Planning and adapting appropriate activities for persons with dementia
  • Implementing and evaluating activities for persons with dementia

Session 4: Managing behaviours

  • Recognising behaviours of concern associated with dementia
  • Applying appropriate responses and management strategies for distressed behaviours

Session 5: Integration into practice

  • Integrating course knowledge into practice through case discussions
