Dysphagia Management Skill Training - Part 1

Dysphagia can lead to malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia. Join this course to gain fundamental knowledge of dysphagia management and intervention in order to assist people with swallowing difficulties.

Course objectives

  • Explain the causes of dysphagia
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of dysphagia and aspiration pneumonia
  • Explain the purpose of diet and fluid modifications
  • Prepare fluids and identify diets of different consistencies
  • Employ basic safe feeding techniques
  • Explain the role of oral hygiene in the person with dysphagia
  • Provide basic oral hygiene interventions and training

Course outline (1 day)

  • Identify signs and symptoms of dysphagia and aspiration pneumonia
  • Introduction to modified diets and fluids
  • Preparation of modified fluids (including nutritional supplements) with hands-on practice
  • Application of basic safe feeding techniques
  • Role of basic oral hygiene
  • Application of basic oral hygiene interventions
