Medication Management course (basic)

Proper medication management is increasingly important in an ageing population with complex care needs. Join this course to gain knowledge and skills needed for safe use of medications.

Course objectives

  • Learn how to handle, store and dispose medications safely and effectively
  • Learn common ailments in the elderly and appropriate medication management
  • Recognise and manage common adverse reactions caused by medications

Course outline (2 days)

Day 1:

  • Different formulations of drugs and their routes of administration
  • Storage conditions, integrity and proper disposal of medications
  • Generic, brand and chemical names of drugs
  • Basic drug information resources
  • Basic understanding of prescriptions
  • Safe medication administration

Day 2:

  • How physiologic changes of ageing affect drug therapy
  • Polypharmacy and its potential risks
  • Common ailments in the elderly
  • Supplements and nutritionals
  • Medications and common conditions related to fall risk
  • Measures to mitigate fall risk
