Powered mobility workshop

Powered mobility device helps to ensure that individuals are able to access to their immediate environments and community. It enables the users to participate in their valued social roles and occupations. This workshop will equip participants on different types of powered mobility equipment and their, proper assessment and seating principles before prescribing the powered mobility devices.

Course objectives

  • Outline the common uses of powered mobility (PM)
  • List the common assessment tools and evaluation process
  • Demonstrate skills in setting up and using different PM devices
  • List the principles of proper seating on PM devices
  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate new users of PM
  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate existing PM users
  • Able to select the appropriate input device/method
  • Able to conduct training session for the users of PM
  • Identify the progression of usage of PM (indoor and outdoor)

Course outline (2 days)

Day 1 (1/2 day)

  • Usage and types of PM devices
  • Roles of Occupational Therapists in prescribing PM devices
  • Assessments in prescription of PM

Day 2 (full day)

  • Add-on powered devices and system components
  • Proper seating on PM devices
  • Evaluation and training process
  • Guidelines for PM and their usage
  • Practical session
