Stroke rehabilitation is an important part of recovery after stroke. Join this course to gain advance knowledge of stroke rehabilitation and learn to assist clients in their rehabilitation.

Course objectives

  • Understand kinetics and kinematics of the gait cycle using the Observational Gait Analysis approach (Rancho phases and critical events of gait observational analysis)
  • Understand features of common pathological gait abnormalities including antalgic gait, hemiplegic gait, sensory ataxia gait and others
  • Identify goals of gait rehabilitation using the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) model
  • Learn how to train to improve walking ability to of patients requiring different assistance level after stroke
  • Learn various balance assessments, exercise strategies, treadmill unweighting training
  • Know the advantages and disadvantages in using instrumented analysis

Course outline (4 half days)

Day 1:

  • Normal gait
  • Instrumented analysis

Day 2:

  • Abnormal gait
  • Goals of gait rehabilitation

Day 3:

  • Balance assessment
  • Training strategies to improve walking ability

Day 4:

  • Skills competency assessment
