In the wake of a stroke, Mr Png confronted the daunting challenge of rebuilding his life, grappling not only with physical limitations but also with a profound sense of loss concerning his identity. A seasoned performer who had spent countless hours singing at various events, he felt a deep void upon his admission to St Luke’s Hospital (SLH), knowing he would have to temporarily pause his beloved pastime – performing.
Introduced to Music Therapy during his hospitalisation to enhance his speech and language abilities post-stroke, Mr Png faced difficulties in his singing stamina. Determined to regain his former strength, he committed himself to daily rehabilitation practices. Despite his struggles, he wholeheartedly wishes to perform for the people around him, sharing anecdotes of his favourite songs with fellow patients and performing for them.
Recognising his desire, Music Therapist Camellia Soon worked with him to improve his singing stamina and empower his identity as a performer. With the support of SLH’s multidisciplinary team, Mr Png’s dream gradually took shape. Together with Camellia, they orchestrated a modest performance, dressed in his favourite golden coat and hat, bringing joy to patients in the wards.
Understanding from Mr Png that he is determined to be discharged and perform once more, Camellia encouraged him to connect more deeply with his audience, fostering bonds beyond mere performance, starting from SLH. During his stay, the music therapy sessions allowed Mr Png to express his identity as a performer while giving back to the community within SLH.
