Mr Lau’s journey has been a testament to resilience, marked by adversity from a skull fracture in 1994 to a challenging battle with a ruptured dermoid cyst. Despite enduring a reopened craniotomy and cyst resection amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, his road to recovery was initially fraught with resistance to any form of rehabilitation upon admission to St Luke’s Hospital (SLH).

However, a pivotal moment arrived in July 2023 when Mr Lau discovered the transformative power of Music Therapy. Initially hesitant, he gradually embraced the sessions under the guidance of Music Therapist Karen, showing remarkable positivity and receptiveness. Through planned interventions using instruments like xylophone and drums, Mr Lau worked on improving his cognitive functions and mobility, completing over 15 sessions to date.

Karen’s person-centred approach, leveraging on Mr Lau’s background as a former teacher, empowered him to take on more of a leading role in co-creating the content of the session, thereby fostering a stronger therapeutic relationship built on trust and understanding between therapist and patient. With tailored objectives celebrating each milestone, Mr Lau found motivation to push forward in his rehabilitation journey, echoing the sentiment, “Music Therapy has transformed me and I now have a better quality of life.”

With each session, tangible progress became apparent as barriers gradually dissolved, facilitating his assimilation into the community around him.
