Resonance of Resilience

Despite facing major health challenges, from a skull fracture in 1994 to a reopened craniotomy and cyst resection during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Lau never gave up. His road to recovery was initially fraught with difficulty as he resisted any form of rehabilitation upon admission to St Luke’s Hospital (SLH).

A pivotal moment arrived in July 2023 when Mr Lau experienced the transformative power of Music Therapy. Under the guidance of Music Therapist Karen Koh, he showed remarkable positivity and receptiveness. Through planned interventions using instruments like xylophone and drums, Mr Lau worked on improving his cognitive functions and mobility, completing over 15 sessions to date.

Karen’s person-centred approach, leveraging on Mr Lau’s background as a former teacher, empowered him to take on more of a leading role in co-creating the content of the session. This fostered a stronger relationship built on trust and understanding. With the celebration of every milestone, Mr Lau found motivation to push forward in his rehabilitation journey.

“Music Therapy has transformed me and I now have a better quality of life,” shared Mr Lau.
