Jeyaraj Indra Raj, 70
Member, Advisory Council, St Luke's Hospital
Enjoy and live each day to the fullest – that is my mantra
To Mr Jeyaraj Indra Raj, age is but a number. At 70 years, he continues to care for the community and family while maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.
His day usually begins at 5am with a 30-lap swim with his wife, followed sometimes by a 9-km walk. Working in law firms in the early stages of his career, the pace of work resulted in the development of asthma. Determined to improve his health, he started exercising regularly and now, it has become a lifestyle habit. “My friends are often awed at how active a life I live and would sometimes ask, ‘How do you maintain a good complexion?’. I always recommend swimming to them,” said Indra Raj with a grin. Although he has stopped actively practicing law, his passion for law and helping the community remains strong. Today, he is a Consultant with a law firm, and an Associate Mediator of the Singapore Mediation Centre.
Volunteerism for Indra Raj has also been a source of fulfilment and joy. He has been a part of various grassroot organisations and was proud to sit on the Braddell Heights Citizens’ Consultative Committee in the 1980s. Until recently, he was the Legal Advisor of Peacehaven Nursing Home and a board member of the Agency for Integrated Care. Having been involved in the establishment and management of St Luke’s Hospital, he continues to serve as one of the Honorary Legal Advisors and member of board sub-committees.
His passion for music has also remained constant all these years. He first learned the instrument whilst in the Anglo Chinese School’s Military Band. He fondly recalls performing at the first six National Day Parades at the Padang. Today, he is, among other things, a member of the wind ensemble at Wesley Methodist Church. “Music keeps me young and happy, and playing the trumpet always brings me joy,” he shared.
