“Providing care means planning for the future of our patients and their healthcare”

Hi, I’m Matthew, a Project Manager at St Luke’s Hospital. I’ve been working in the healthcare industry for the last nine years.

My current role at St Luke’s Hospital is to manage SLH’s portfolio of funded projects. I also directly manage the campus expansion project, to ensure our infrastructure can support our doctors, nurses, and staff teams to do what they do best – provide the best patient care and experience.

Growing up, both my parents were doctors, and the dinner table conversations were always around patient care and what happened in the hospitals. In the long run, that influenced me, and I grew up wanting to work in healthcare.

Initially, I considered becoming a doctor, but I discovered I had good business acumen, especially in operations and running medical facilities. It also made me realise doctors need a strong support team to ensure their work can be done effectively in the long run.

Working in both the public and private sectors of healthcare has taught me the importance of maintaining business rigour while optimising patient care.

I recall a past experience at a hospital where choosing to maintain a long-term partnership ultimately improved patient care, benefiting both patients and the organisation.

Patients need to know that they can be well taken care of by a hospital – not just their clinical needs but holistically, including social, pastoral, and emotional care too. I see that being provided in St Luke’s Hospital.

Whether a patient eventually gets a breakthrough in their medical condition or accepting their circumstances, we’ll never know. But it’s important that healthcare providers present the best options to our patients.

Eventually, my dream is to build up a hospice with my brother who is also a doctor and serve to the best of my abilities. In the meantime, building up long-term plans and ensuring operations are running smoothly, is my way of contributing to the healthcare industry.
