Principal Pharmacist

"Care for the patients like they are my family members – that helps us to bring the best care for them"

I’m Jennifer, a Principal Pharmacist at St Luke’s Hospital. My healthcare journey spans over a decade, with most of my experience rooted in oncology at the National Cancer Centre, where I spent more than 10 years specialising in cancer care and chemotherapy management.

What truly inspired my path to St Luke’s Hospital was a desire to challenge myself and expand my understanding of Singapore’s healthcare landscape. After years in specialised care, I felt drawn to explore the community hospital setting – to see how my expertise could contribute to a different patient population and care model. When a former colleague and good friend mentioned an opening at St Luke’s Hospital, it felt like perfect timing for this new chapter in my career.

Working in a community hospital has taught me that healthcare extends far beyond specialised treatments. Here, I encountered every condition, from chronic diseases to infections, with cancer patients forming just a small portion of our community. This diversity presents both challenges and opportunities for growth.

One particularly meaningful memory occurred just before Chinese New Year. A patient came in with questions about her prescription, and I realised she might benefit from a different medication that would reduce side effects. Even as operations wound down for the holidays, I coordinated with her primary care doctor and our team to optimise her treatment plan. The following week, she returned specifically to personally express her gratitude. Though the gesture might seem small, knowing I helped to make a difference was deeply rewarding.

My care philosophy is simple – treat every patient as if they were a family member. This mindset has guided me throughout my career, from acute care to specialised oncology, and now within the community hospital setting at St Luke’s Hospital. It ensures I always strive to provide the best possible care, regardless of the setting.

What keeps me going? The language and communication challenges we face daily present unique opportunities for creative problem-solving and learning. Whether it is using visual aids with icons for medication timing, enlisting translators, or learning phrases in different languages from patients and their caregivers, these interactions add joy to my work. Each day brings new lessons, and I’m continually grateful for the chance to grow while making a meaningful impact in our community healthcare system.
