At 57, Mr Tan discovered that it’s never too late to turn the page – as long as you set your heart and mind on it.
For most of his adult life, he was a heavy smoker, going through two to three packs of cigarettes a day. For him, smoking wasn’t just a habit—it was how he coped with the stress of a demanding job. But one day, everything changed.
In 2024, Mr Tan experienced a sudden, sharp pain in his chest that prompted him to seek medical attention. Tests revealed a significant blockage in a blood vessel leading to his heart—a sobering wake-up call. It became clear that quitting smoking was no longer just a goal, but a crucial step for his heart and overall health.
After undergoing surgery, he was admitted to St Luke’s Hospital (SLH) for rehabilitative care. During his recovery, his family rallied around him, offering encouragement as he began his first attempt to quit smoking after many years. Their support, combined with his own desire for a healthier future, planted the first seeds of change.
Recognising his desire to quit smoking, the care team supported his journey. He was started on nicotine patches during his inpatient stay to help manage his cravings.
The early days were the most challenging — temptation struck often, especially during moments of boredom. But Mr Tan stayed focused, reminding himself that quitting wasn’t just for his own health — it was also about protecting his grandchildren from second-hand smoke and being present in their lives for years to come.
Upon discharge, he was referred to our Smoking Cessation Programme at St Luke’s Community Clinic (SLCC) for continued support to remain smoke-free. He was given a four-week supply of nicotine patches and scheduled for review a month later.
“With determination, the right support, and timely intervention, successful and lasting change is possible — even for those who have been smoking for many years,” shared Pharmacist Ming Li.
At his follow-up appointment, Pharmacist Ming Li offered guidance, celebrated his progress, and adjusted his treatment with lower-dose patches to support his quit journey.

Since his last review at SLCC, Mr Tan has remained smoke-free and no longer needs the nicotine patches. Today, Mr Tan breathes easier, feels stronger, and enjoys more precious moments with his family. His story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to make a change—and that with the right support, a healthier, smoke-free life is within reach.
