After a life-changing episode of hearing loss, Patricia Wong, a 53-year-old passionate songwriter, faced the daunting challenge of adapting to a new reality. Struggling to hear both her guitar and voice simultaneously, she grappled with the heartbreaking possibility that she may not be able to work on another song.
Admitted to St Luke’s Hospital (SLH) for rehabilitation, Patricia faced much anxiety and communication difficulties due to hearing loss. Gradually, those feelings began to ease.
“Day by day, the staff communicated with me using paper and pen. It made expressing myself so much easier and helped calm my fears. That’s when I began to feel a sense of hope,” Patricia shared.
Her recovery was holistic, focusing not only on physical healing but also on her emotional and spiritual well-being. A turning point came when she discovered music therapy. With the support of music therapist Karen Koh, who helped transcribe and arrange her musical ideas, Patricia was able to bring her creations to life once again. She even discovered that she could sing in tune when accompanied by someone else.
Collaborating with Karen on melodies and lyrics brought her immense joy and allowed her to channel her energy into something purposeful. Her passion for songwriting reignited, Patricia found a way to process her emotions, rebuild her confidence, and reconnect with her creativity.
Alongside music therapy, SLH’s multidisciplinary team – including dietitians, pastoral staff, and therapists – provided comprehensive care. When Patricia was dangerously underweight due to persistent nausea and frequent vomiting, her dietitian stepped in with personalised guidance, helping her regain a healthy weight.
Small acts of kindness – like tending to her plants and sharing scripture – further uplifted her walk in faith and gave her the confidence to embrace her recovery.
Patricia’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and faith. With compassionate care and music as her anchor, she transformed adversity into inspiration, touching lives through her gratitude and the songs she now shares.
Now discharged, Patricia expresses her gratitude: “I want to thank the SLH team in Wards 3D and 2D, especially the doctors, nurses, therapists, medical social workers, pastoral counsellors, dietitians and the cleaners. All of you have been a part of my journey.”
