Mdm Gin Bee Hoon, with the help of her son Dominic and Nurse Manager Emily Ng, organised a buffet to thank staff—turning it into a heartfelt reunion with loved ones.

Mdm Gin Bee Hoon, 62, had always been strong in spirit, having battled cancer since 2021. When her cancer relapsed two years later, she chose to forgo further treatment.

As her condition progressed, she soon lost her ability to walk and underwent spinal surgery to have screws inserted. In October 2024, she was admitted to St Luke’s Hospital (SLH) for rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility.

Though the diagnosis was difficult to accept, Mdm Gin found comfort in the compassionate care she received at SLH — a place that held special meaning for her.

Years ago, she had accompanied her late mother through two admissions to the hospital. Having witnessed the kindness and dedication of the staff, she knew that when the time came, SLH was where she wanted to be.

“The doctors and nurses here treat every patient with kindness and respect,” she shared. “When I cry from the pain, they comfort me. ‘Don’t worry, you’re not fighting alone. We’re here with you,’ they say.”

Grateful for the care she had received, Mdm Gin wanted to give back.

With the help of her son, Dominic, and Nurse Manager Emily Ng, she organised a buffet dinner at the hospital to show appreciation for the staff who had supported her.

The event planning went smoothly, with Emily handling the logistics while Dominic coordinated dietary preferences and arranged a date and time that would allow as many staff and family members to attend.

As family and friends gathered for a long-awaited reunion, Mdm Gin expressed her heartfelt gratitude. “Seeing my loved ones after so long — many faces have changed. I feel very happy.”

For Emily, Mdm Gin was someone very close to her heart. She fondly recalls their mini outings—whether visiting the hospital’s Koi Pond or taking a short trip to the nearby supermarket—small moments that brought Mdm Gin joy. “I wanted to do something meaningful for her because she deserved it,” Emily shared.

As Mdm Gin grew weaker, she has since been transferred to the hospital’s dedicated palliative ward.

Reflecting on his mother’s time at SLH, Dominic was deeply moved by the warmth and professionalism of the care team.

“The staff are patient, understanding, and truly care for their patients,” he said. “Through family conferences with the care team, we were able to discuss Mum’s wishes and how she wants to spend her time moving forward.”
